What does it mean to be a Rebel?
Rebel! Gosh darn it, I love that word. IT TURNS ME ON!
I say it a lot to people. Be rebellious. Be a rebel. Be a rebellious Woman in Training.
Here is the dictionary definition:
A rebel is a person who resists or defies rules or norms or rises up against the powers that be. In its more serious sense, a rebel is a revolutionary trying to overthrow a government. … Rebel is also a verb meaning to resist or rise up against authority or tradition.
My definition of Rebellious or being a rebel:
To resist or rise up against tradition. To be a badass who seeks out the unconventional.
This is how I describe myself as a rebel. I’m not a traditional gal, and I resist tradition. I’m up for a thrill. I’d rather have another adventure than a job for 30 years. Moving with the flow tends to be a task. Not afraid to make big changes in life. Sometimes my style can be intimidating. I’m a
leader, not a follower. I’m inquisitive. Not a shrinking violet when it comes to talking about things I’m passionate about. My career has never defined me. Not afraid to ask personal questions or reveal details about myself. March to the beat of my own drum. I don’t blindly follow the rules; rules are meant to be broken. I live for new experiences. I refuse to be labeled by anyone. Being alone does not scare me. I can turn any situation into a cause for celebration. My heroes are rule-breakers.
I resist when someone tells me to do something; I want to do my own thing, in my own way. My husband calls it my process. Haha.
No, not everyone is classified with this type of personality. Not everyone is capable or has the desire to be an extremist. However, I do feel everyone has a little rebel within them. That part that wants to go against the grain and break some rules. That part that yearns for something new. Remember that time you snuck candy into the movie theater?
Yes, some folks are uncomfortable with the term rebel because they think this means going hog wild, refusing to listen to authority, going on a rampage to prove a point, offending others, overthrowing the government, losing self-control and so on…
I assure you I’m not overthrowing any government. Politics have nothing to do with my rebellious heart. Okay, maybe a smidgeon, but that isn’t my point.
When I speak about being a rebel in the coaching world, I ask clients
How can you rebel against what you have always done?
Yes, this may often bring confusion because they aren’t sure what I’m talking about or don’t know how to react. So, for the sake of clarity, I delve a little deeper. Here are some examples.
Is what you’ve always done working for you? And How is that working for you? Are you dissatisfied with the status quo? Are you needing to make progress but unsure how to get started? Are you keen to shake things up by trying something new?
If you answered yes to any of these, then you know something needs to change. And with change, there is a bit of rebellion. Whoa! Read that again!
With change, there is a bit of rebellion.
When you change things up, You are rebelling against your tradition. The tradition of doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for something better. or different.
I help the woman that is ready to rebel against “her norm.” Rebel against society. Rebel against lifetime conditioning. Working on spontaneity. Rebelling against diet culture. Upping her career game. Reinventing her style. Walking away from a past that isn’t serving her.
So tell me about the one thing in your life that you want to rebel against. What kind of thing do you want to do that you wouldn’t have dared do before due to a lifetime of “good girl” conditioning? What tradition do you want to change? Where do you want to get curious? Does your routine need some passion? Do you want to show courage in the face of adversity? What area of your life needs to be activated. Turned on?
Being a rebel when you aren’t a rebel. Its such a turn on!
XO,
Amy
